Descendants of Henry Senterfeit I

Generation No. 1

1.  HENRY1 SENTERFEIT I was born Unknown, and died Bet. 1779 - 1780 in Ninety-Six District, South Carolina.  He married UNKNOWN.

Notes for HENRY SENTERFEIT I:
He was a Tory prisoner in Ninety-Six District, SC from 1776-1779.  Sharon Marsh

I'm descended from the Henry Senterfitt in South Carolina in 1779 in prison. I did find some additional info on his prison confinement. He was listed in the SC Magazine of Ancestral Research, Vol V, Number 4, 1977 as a prisoner in the Ninety-six jail. He was convicted by a special court held March 22, 1779 and discharged by the governor, "after being removed by Habeus". Does anyone have any idea what that might mean. In other citations the statement is "removed by habeus corpus", which today means to produce a detained person before a court to determine the lawfulness of the detention. Since he was convicted, I guess he was found guilty of his crime (being a Tory?) I have certainly tried to find some reference to him or any other Senterfitt/feit before this point with no success.

To me the name sounds Dutch or German. This might explain the imprisonment since Germans were mistrusted during the Revolutionary War because of the Hessians brought over by the English to fight.

The Ninety-Six historic site is near Greenwood, SC. I understand that some remains of the jail still exist at the site.  Sharon Marsh
You have sent me to Encarta and to more Latin language websites than necessary! I cannot find an instance of "habeas" used alone. Did you copy from the original records in Ninety Six? If not, maybe there was a copy error. I found it always used as "habeas corpus" (Latin "[that you have the body]") which is a writ or order issued by a court to a person having custody of another, commanding him or her to produce the detained person in order to determine the legality of detention. English usage for the purpose to liberate illegally detained persons. In US history it was suspended during Shay's rebellion (Nov. 1786-July1787 in Massachusetts) and during the Civil War. Neither applies to this case. You need to see the original record to see if a word was left our OR if the word was different altogether. No real help, huh?  Sandra

I am from the branch of the family that stayed in South Carolina. They seem to have lived here first, before moving on to other Southeastern states and territories. Henry is the earliest one that I have ever been able to find. You have probably noticed that we spell it "Senterfeit" for the most part, the SC records (and us locally) usually preferring that spelling through the last 200 years. As for the "Habeas" reference, it probably was habeas corpus, and as far as we can tell, was possibly Tory-related as you have suggested. I read that same published extract from the original court records, but the original was lost during the Civil War. I agree with you all on what you say. To me, it reads that he was released due to “habeas”, meaning that they had nothing on him after all. The Whigs locked up the Tories for being Tories and the Tories locked up the Whigs for being Whigs, so it depends on who locked up whom. Partisanship was fierce often particularly brutal in the SC upcountry during the war, and it was very much a frontier mindset, according to what happened to some of my other ancestors. People were sometimes falsely accused, tried, and later released for lack of evidence. So, who knows ? It is true that there is a Tory suspicion regarding this ancestor based on circumstantial evidence, because he went briefly to Georgia, which was common after the Revolution for SC Tories, there being an exile law passed in the legislature about that time, but returned soon afterwards. Still, I have no documentation of Tory leanings, nor of actual exile. All conjecture so far. Completely on the other hand, there is a tradition in one part of the family that he was a very large man who, when his (Whig) commanding officer had his horse shot out from under him, he carried him about on his shoulders for the remainder of the battle, while his commanding officer directed things from above. Alas however, I have no documentation for any of that, but it makes a nice story.
Neither I nor my genealogist buddy has ever found any Senterfeits, Senterfitts, or Senterfits anywhere in the European parts of the internet. As to an origin, I am told Germany all the time and Switzerland has even been given as "definite fact", but alas, there is no documentation. My Swiss friend says that it is definitely not a Swiss name. Could they have died out in Europe ? Surely not.
Anyway, there is a plat registered in the SC Archives for Henry Senterfeit (State Plats, Vol 27, P112, 200A, May 8 1790)for 200 acres on Holle Creek, in Orangeburg District. Back at that time, Ninety-Six and Orangeburg were both enormous administrative districts in the SC upcountry. You had to ride for days to get to the courthouse. We believe this location to be in Lexington County, partway between those two modern towns. If I remember correctly, the Lexington County area passed administratively to Orangeburg from Ninety-Six during one of the county reorganizations, and later became its own entity, if that helps to place you geographically. Some records moved with the reorgs, and were subsequently stolen or destroyed during the Civil War. The people at the SC Archives told me that was the fate of the county records I needed. Sorry for the long message and all the conjecture.  Mike Senterfeit

South Carolina Loyalists and Rebels
Petition to Lord Germain Dated 19 April 1782

The following petition, signed by eleven (11) South Carolina Loyalist Officers, was submitted to the Right Honorable Lord George Germain for presentation to the Crown.  The document probably was drafted by Thomas Fletchall, perhaps with the aid of Joseph Robinson (both are signatories thereto).  The petition provides the names of approximately 300 Loyalists who were murdered by the Whigs during the Revolution.  For referencing purposes, I have added a number to each name.  John Mayfield, number 171, is the only person whose biography is posted to this web site.  The petition has been previously published in several books concerning the Loyalists of South Carolina; however, the original document is located in the Public Record Office (PRO), London, Manuscript Reference CO5, Volume 82.

Charlestown, South Carolina

19 April 1782

TO THE KING'S MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY

MOST GRACIOUS SOVEREIGN

WE your Majesty's dutiful and loyal Subjects, once the inhabitants of the frontier of South Carolina, now refugees here, humbly beg leave openly to assure our Sovereign that we are His true and loyal Subjects, in which Principles we are confirmed, and stand independent, divested of all temporizing motives, in consequence of which we have sacrificed Our All, in order to enjoy the blessings of the happiest Constitution guarded by the best of Monarchs.

Thus disposed, it is with astonishment and indignation we learn that men about your Royal Person dare to vilify the conduct of your faithful servants in America, we allude to the Duke of Richmond's Speech in the House of Peers the 31st of January 1782, when he openly disapproves of Justice being executed on the Rebel Haynes. It reflects on the characters of Earl Cornwallis, Lord Rawdon, and our Commandant Lieutenant Colonel Balfour, officers who have made the real interest of their Country the constant rule of their truly virtuous conduct.

Gratitude should have drawn this acknowledgment from us, yet we might have been silent, had it not been for the open and extraordinary assertion of His Grace of Richmond “that the loyalists of South Carolina did not hesitate to denominate the execution of Haynes to be Murder, and that of the foulest complexion.” -- this we deny, and are fully of Opinion, that his execution was a proper example, and Just reward for his treason and infidelity and are Sorry the same mode of correcting rebels was so long deferred, through laudable, but we conceive, mistaken motives.

We are not to suppose His Grace is ignorant that the Usurpers in this Province have murdered above three hundred Men, some after and some without pretended trials, on a bare Suspicion of their being attached to your Majesty's Government.

His Grace and virtuous Colleagues (in the support of rebellion) sit at ease fabricating Systems to prolong the War, at the expense of the Blood, the treasure, the honor, the happiness of the Nation, whilst we without regret suffer in support and defense of Government.

We sincerely lament the encouragement Rebellion receives from their opposition to your Majesty's Wise and Just measures, which without doubt has been conducive to prolong this unnatural rebellion, we therefore, actuated by Principles of Loyalty, and conducted by honest sincerity, have presumed to make this

declaration of our Sentiments, and that your Majesty's benevolent endeavors for the happiness of your People, be crowned with Success, is the most sincere wish of

Your Majesty's Most dutiful and Loyal Subjects
