Greene County, Alabama was established in 1817, and the document described here represents one of the county’s earliest surviving records. The names recorded derive from the routine legal and administrative business of the county during its formative years. Many entries concern individuals who had died and whose estates were brought before the Orphans Court for settlement. Other names belong to heirs, executors, administrators, guardians of minor children, and attorneys acting on behalf of interested parties. In a number of cases, individuals were appointed by the court as commissioners to appraise property or to perform other specific duties. A smaller number of entries relate to miscellaneous matters, including petitions for permission to erect water mills on local streams.
Care was taken to transcribe each name as accurately as possible. In some instances, however, the handwriting or condition of the original record made exact interpretation uncertain. It was also common for the clerk or recorder to vary the spelling of a name from one entry to another. Where such variations occur, alternate spellings have been noted in parentheses.
