Clay County Alabama Marriage Records, 1872-1955

This collection of records at FamilySearch consists of marriage records from Clay County Alabama. These marriage records cover the years of 1872-1955. To help users better understand and access these records, I have created this page.

These are called “county marriages” as they were recorded by the county, not the state, and they can be found within the county’s records. As can be found across the South, these records were not always recorded for blacks and when recorded were often done so in a different book. It appears that Clay County Alabama began keeping separate records for colored people in 1907 and continued up through 1950.

You will need to be registered with FamilySearch to access these free records. Some of the records are searchable, but not all. It’s important that if you do not get results from the search, but you think your ancestor was married in Clay County, that you then use the links below to access digital images of the marriage volumes directly.

These records are held at the Clay County Courthouse in Ashland, Alabama. Some pages wanting, torn, faded, bleeding through, etc.

As is often the case in records where names are repeated, a name may be misspelled as in this case. You can see that the name for Charles G. Partridge in the bond at the top but written as Charles G. Partrige in the marriage certificate below. This record as a result, was indexed under Partrige not Partridge. Partridge is, however, the correct spelling. This is why we search for variant spellings if the record does not first show up.
