Petition of Elizabeth Matilda Thompson Smith

In 1914 my grandmother, Elizabeth Matilda Thompson Smith, filed a petition for a pension on the confederate service of my grandfather, Jonathan Alexander Smith who served in Dawson’s Cavalry Company. She was denied because at that time no record could be found of Dawson’s Cavalry. She obtained affidavits from two members of the unit who attested to the fact that my grandfather did indeed serve in the company. It also gives a brief history. If you think this would be of interest to you I could send you a copy. – Contributed by George R, Smith. Affidavit of A. W.

Bullock County, Alabama Indians

Tchona nagi, also known as Chananagi ,an Upper Creek village, was located in the county, giving its name to Chunnennuggee Ridge, but location and other details are wanting. The territory of the county includes few large streams, and is in the extreme southern section of the Upper Creek territory. It was evidently not very thickly peopled. Mounds were found on the plantation of J. H. Fielder [1]I believe this to be the farm of Jack Fielder of Bruceville, Alabama., 10 miles from Union Springs in 1879. Mr. Barker dug into an Indian mound last Friday, on the plantation of Major

An area in the southeastern part of the State, lying to the south and southeast of the black belt, and including part of Bullock, Lowndes and Montgomery Counties. The area contains approximately 2,300 square miles. The line of division between the black belt, or prairie section, and the Chunnennuggee Ridge, or blue marl section, is marked by a rather abrupt ascent, amounting almost to an escarpment, 100 feet or more in height.
