Obituary of Sharon Denise Miller (1958-2019)

Ms. Sharon Denise Miller, age 60 of Mobile, AL passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Providence Hospital. Ms. Miller was a life-long resident of Mobile and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas R. and Betty Simpson Miller and her sister, Vicki Miller White. She is survived by her nephew, Chris (Shyla) White of Mobile, AL and several cousins. Graveside services was held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 10 A.M. at Rock Cemetery with Rev. Fredrick Barrow officiating. Flomaton Funeral Home Directing.

Construction of Fort Gaines

This plan of Fort Gaines shows the general shape and outline of the fort. You can also see the outline of the tip of the island where the fort is located as it was when the fort was constructed.

Fort Gaines, constructed in the 1850’s, was designed by Joseph G. Totten. Totten was, along with Simon Bernard, one of the original members of the board of engineers placed in charge of fortifications. Totten designed many of the later fortifications of the Third System, and was the foremost fortification engineer in the United States during this time. Fort Gaines shows a different design philosophy than many of the earlier fortifications, and is much simpler than many of the Third System forts.
