I’ve recovered two old photographs belonging to the FERNER Family of Chicago. The first is a family photograph including the parents Belle and Dr. FERNER with four children including, Inez, Thelma, Dan, and Herbert. They are also identified as “Aunt Belle’s Family” in the photograph which was taken at the W. R. Banks Studio in Chicago, IL. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900’s with the parents in their 30’s or 40’s and the children ranging from infant to 9 years. William L. Alldredge was born on April 20, 1864, near Huntsville, Alabama, the son of John and Elizabeth (Byrd) Alldredge, natives of Alabama. The father died in 1867, and the mother when our subject was but six years old. The mother’s father, William Byrd, was a minister of the Methodist church and died while in confederate service. William L. had one brother, James F., who was killed by a blast in the Acme mine, on June 23, 1901. Recipients of The Southern Cross of Honor from Madison, Jackson, and Marshall Counties In the year 1899, the United Daughters of the Confederacy began awarding recognition badges to the aging soldiers of the South. According to the traditional history of the Cherokees they were the first inhabitants of the Tennessee valley. About 1650 they withdrew from the region to the east of the Cumberland and Sand Mountains, reserving the valley as a hunting ground. Some years after their withdrawal bands of Shawnees moved southward from Cumberland river and took possession of the Tennessee River country in Alabama. This action angered the Cherokees and they were soon at war with the intruders.
